“Loudoun Eighth-Grader Eyes a Cure for Cancer, Partners with Research Team”

From The Loudoun Times-Mirror:

Alex Misiaszek, an eighth-grader at Nysmith School for the Gifted, is collaborating with a research team in Baltimore to create an organism inside the human body that produces a cancer-killing molecule. The student will spend his free time researching and developing his hypotheses with professional scientists. Misiaszek says his motivations is simply “to help people.”

“Cancer is a horrible disease. We’ve all lost family member and friends to it,” he said. “Finding a cure for cancer has always been a fascination for me and I’m really glad I get to pursue it.”

Misiaszek said his ground breaking idea came in part from  a science project he did last year.

“I took the DNA from a coral cell that made it red and then I put it into an E. Coli cell to prove that if you took DNA from one organism and put it into a foreign one, the foreign organism will pass that trait onto its offspring,” he explained.

“Va. Boy, 13, Working to Help Find Cancer Cure”

by Amy Aubert, ABC7

Friday, November 4th, 2016

13-year-old Alex Misiaszek goes about his Friday, at Nysmith School for the Gifted in Herndon, just like any other 8th grader.

“Alright, let’s see what we can come up with,” Misiaszek said, smiling.

He says he’s on his way to helping find a cure for cancer.

“I’m really glad that I can hopefully help people with this cancer cure, that’s really my main goal in life is to help as many people as I can,” said Misiaszek.

He says after his grandfather passed away from cancer, he wanted to work to find a cure.

“I’ve always been fascinated by the disease because it’s such a terrible thing and I thought there had to be some sort of a solution,” he said.

He’s taking his 7th grade science project to the next level.

“Imagine these two weights are cells and the one without the red is the healthy cell and the one with the red is the cancer cell. And these two marbles are the MP1 molecules,” said Misiaszek, demonstrating how his project would work.

He says after presenting his idea this fall, a team of researchers at the Baltimore Underground Science Space are planning to help him along the way.

“In the cancer cell, the MP1 molecule can actually bind to the cell membrane and bore large holes in it, thus causing the cell to die,” he further explained.

He says he’s still in the early steps of making his project a reality.

Tom Burkett, the Founder of the Baltimore Underground Science Space, says they are excited to work with Misiaszek and thought his project was a great idea. They plan to offer advice and support along the way. Msiaszek says he’s planning to work on the project at the Baltimore Underground Science Space about once a week.

February 1, 2017

— A fourth grade team from The Nysmith School in Herndon achieved Highest Honors in the recent WordMasters Challenge—a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students annually—scoring an impressive 185 points out of a possible 200 to place third in the nation.

Rishabh Kumaran (of Herndon) and Nicholas Toskey (South Riding) each earned a perfect score, making them two of only 22 fourth graders in the country to do so. Nysmith’s Ananya Kakayadi (Reston) also recorded an outstanding score competing in the event’s highly competitive Gold division.

The WordMasters Challenge is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level) and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships. Working to solve the analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically. Although most vocabulary enrichment and analogy-solving programs are designed for high school students, WordMasters Challenge materials have been specifically created for students in Grades 3-8.
