nsb-2016-1

The National Science Bowl® (NSB) for middle school was established in 2002, and is a competitive event for middle school students. School teams compete in a fast-paced question and answer format to solve technical problems in the science and math fields. More than 4,500 middle school students compete each year in the NSB. This is one of the nation’s largest science competitions and was created by the Department of Energy to encourage students to excel in math and science.

Each school that participates has a team of 4 students with one alternate and a coach. The team that represented Nysmith School consisted of Vaibhav Sharma, Ajit Kadaveru, Anusha Allamsetty, Ishaan Kumar, Kaien Yang and Coach Venkata Allamsetty.

The Middle school competition that Nysmith students competed in, consisted of two types of competition – Academic Science and Math Competition and an Electric Car Race Competition.

The Nysmith team performed very well in the round robin stage of the Academic Competition and secured 3rd place in their division. They lost only to Fort Settlement Middle School of TX (last year’s champions) and to Marshall Middle School from IL (lost by a margin of only 4 points).

In the Electric Car Race Competition the students were given the motor, battery and parts and were asked to design, build, and race their car. Nysmith team built a car with an innovative gear design. This was a great hands-on experience where their creative engineering skills would come in to play. The Nysmith students missed advancing to the next round by 1 second.

This was a wonderful experience for all students. The students had a taste of what it is like to compete at the National Level with the best teams that represent each state. Most importantly, they had lots of fun, staying in their dorms and sleeping in their bunk beds, playing pool, basketball and volley ball in their free time, wearing a different science bowl t-shirt each day, and enjoying unlimited desserts.

A big congratulations to the students, coach Venkata Allamsetty and parents that showed commitment and dedication.

More information is available on the NSB website: http://www.science.energy.gov/wdts/nsb/.

The 6th grade Odyssey of the Mind team, the Nysmith Brainy Bunch, had a flawless presentation last week at the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa.  Over 800 teams from around the world gathered in Ames to compete in the OM World Championship. The Nysmith Brainy Bunch kicked off the competition as the first team to present their long-term presentation, a creative solution to the Division 2 Problem 2 technical problem entitled “Something Fishy.”

G AAAAA 2016_5_31 ODYSSEY OF THE MIND AWARD TROPHY IMG_-005

The team’s solution took the judges on a Mars Odyssey to find life on their life-like set resembling the surface of Mars.  Their innovative catch devices caught moving items that appeared at different distances throughout the set. The team used a complicated remote reaching device with a handcrafted claw, a pulley system driven Mars rover, and a crab trap inspired entrapment device to catch moving items that were set in motion by team created automata devices.

The team created an amazing illusion of a required “weather change” by use of camouflage, magnets, and pulley devices that simulated a Martian dust storm. The team also used artistry, engineering, origami, live music, as well as a song and dance to present their long-term solution.

G AAAAA 2016_5_31 ODYSSEY OF THE MIND AWARD TROPHY IMG_-014
Sixth grader Sean Gillen narrated the presentation as the humorous “catch character” Chewy Beldar–Martian extraordinaire.  Christian Schipma played “Dave,” the astronaut fisher character who along with Astronauts Chandler Wimmer and Ashley Nguyen “Cosmo Couture” worked to operate the team’s technical devices.  Spencer Huang played multiple characters including the “PAL 9000,” “Siri,” and “Agent Moulder–FBI.”  Emma Jing played the role of Mission Control wowing the crowd with her live piano performance throughout the presentation of the theme song from “2001 A Space Odyssey,” the theme song from the “X-files,” and an Etude by Chopin to accompany the team’s weather change.

The teams devices, set, and costumes were made with recycled trash with a total value less than $145.00 dollars.G AAAAA 2016_5_31 ODYSSEY OF THE MIND AWARD TROPHY IMG_-010

This first-time World Finalist team has worked for countless hours since the first weeks of school to research and create their long term solution and to practice spontaneous problem solving skills to earn the Regional and Virginia State titles, prerequisites to achieving a World Finalist slot.

The team had an excellent showing at Worlds, competing against highly competitive and seasoned 6-8th grade teams from 50 states and 25 countries, placing 13th in the world.  Thanks to coaches Scott Schipma & Jackie Becker, as well as the parents of all of the team members who worked together throughout the year to coach spontaneous problem solving multiple days each week.

Congratulations Sean, Christian, Ashley, Chandler, Emma, and Spencer on a job well done and for representing Nysmith with pride!!!

Congratulations to 8th grade student Kaien Yang, for winning 3rd place in the nation at the 2016 3M Science Competition held in St. Paul Minnesota . Kaien developed a way to use pumpkin seed oil to create both a biodiesel and bioplastic that reduces emissions and pollution from plastic.

Since its inception in 2008, the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars in student prizes, paired students with world-renowned scientists to give them real-world insights and delivered much-needed science resources to millions of students, teachers and families across the country. It targets students in the years when research indicates their interest in science begins to wane and encourages them to explore scientific concepts and creatively communicate their findings. Winners have gone on to be featured in Forbes magazine’s annual “30 Under 30” list, speak in front of members of Congress and attendees at the United Nations, meet the President of the United States, and demonstrate inventions on national television programs.

Nysmith Team Achieves Highest Honors in WordMasters Challenge

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

January 2017

A team representing Nysmith School achieved Highest Honors in the recent WordMasters Challenge™—a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 150,000 students annually. The fourth grade team scored an impressive 185 points out of a possible 200 in the first of three meets this year, placing third in the nation.

Competing in the very difficult Gold Division of the WordMasters Challenge™, fourth graders Rishabh Kumaran and Nicholas Toskey each earned a perfect score of 20 on the challenge. Nationally, only 22 fourth graders achieved this result. Other students from Nysmith School who achieved outstanding results in the meet include fourth grader Ananya Kakayadi.

The WordMasters Challenge™ is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of interesting new words (considerably harder than grade level), and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships.  Working to solve the analogies helps students learn to think both analytically and metaphorically.  Although most vocabulary enrichment and analogy-solving programs are designed for use by high school students, WordMasters Challenge™ materials have been specifically created for younger students in grades three through eight.  They are particularly well suited for children who are motivated by the challenge of learning new words and enjoy the logical puzzles posed by analogies.

The WordMasters Challenge™ program is administered by a company based in Indianapolis, Indiana, which is dedicated to inspiring high achievement in American schools.  Further information is available at the company’s website:  http://www.wordmasterschallenge.com.
